Penrith is an old market town with individual food, craft, dress, and other shops
Penrith, the market town of Eden District, is 20 minutes away, is a great shopping centre for small individual shops not found in the metropolis. If crafts is your pleasure there are excellent shops both selling crafts ready-made and kits to make your own.
Eden is the name of our local district, derived from the River Eden in - naturally - the Eden Valley. This is a beautiful area between two national parks, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales and also the northern Pennines.
Carlisle, the great Border City, 15 minutes away, has many shops including the well-known high-street names.

Long Meg - a tall stone set outside the main circle

Ask us for our local knowledge: we can direct you to the best places to enjoy around here!

Places to eat: many tea and coffee shops provide snacks and light lunches. For evenings there are some excellent village pubs - ask us for recommendations - plus the usual variety of restaurants and hotels within reach.

Shopping is a short distance away in both the city of Carlisle and the historic market town of Penrith. There are art galleries, houses and gardens to visit (some seasonal), events and wonderful views of the countryside and mountains. For the more active there is local walking in plenty with public footpaths for short or strenuous excursions. The Miller's Way (Kendal to Carlisle) is nearby. It is a short drive to the Eden Valley to the east or the Lake District to the west.

It is only 20 minutes to the Lake District National Park at Caldbeck, a pretty rural village with a selection of specialist shops and eating places. Ullswater, famous for Wordsworth's daffodils, is 20 minutes to the southwest and there is lots of stunning scenery to explore by car, bicycle, on foot or on Ullswater's lake steamer.

We can advise on routes for cycling on a multitude of tracks and quiet roads. (If you bring your own bike we can store it under cover for you overnight but you must have your own insurance). Photography, wildlife, historical and archaeological buildings and monuments, gardens, garden centres, galleries ..... there is a great selection in this area.
